Kids Camp


Painting and Sculpture Basics for Little Ones
Instructor: Kimberly Kurrus

Description: We will learn how to paint in long and short strokes, and what the purpose/use is of different types of brushes. We will use fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, pre-planning (as developmentally appropriate according to ages and stages), and individual and small group skills to create several take-home pieces over two weeks. Children will explore one, two, and three-dimensional art.


Book Making

We will make four versions of the story you love best in four different ways of binding. I will be using a book about making books and the children will learn how to make pop-up books, sewn binding books, accordion books, and flip books. Fabulous for small motor skills and creating from imagination (divergent thinking/problem solving skills).

Animation Workshop

Collage with Found Objects!

Description: Students will create two separate themed pieces using natural and other found objects that will stay glued on canvas. We will sort by physical characteristics and purpose/use. We will work individually as a large group. The last class will be a critique of everyone’s work with cookies and tea.

*Parents welcome at the last class especially for the critique or to help out if they want. Just let the teacher know ahead of time. We’ll be using a hot glue gun and other types of glue, wire, needle and thread/safety rules will be followed.

Discovering Your Unique World View

Description: This camp will find fun ways to learn the fundamentals of Fine Art. Games and projects will be explored in each session. Chinese Culture

Calder’s Circus

Description: In thus fun, informative class we will be exploring Alexander Calder’s art before his famous mobiles. The main idea will be on his amazing miniature circus that was created mostly from recycled items and uniquely performed entirely by himself. Each student will create their own miniature circus act and help with the construction of miniature tents, trapezes, and other circus environment art using recycled materials. At the end of the session we will perform our own spectacular miniature circus for our friends and family.

Description: Private piano lessons for beginners utilizing the Tradition method of piano instruction. Traditional piano, which should be taken around the same time the child is learning to read words, is the method by which notes are read on the musical staff. Mr. Atwood utilizes the Faber method books when teaching and incorporates ear training, memorization, rhythm/beat and theory into the lessons as well.

After Preschool Pop In.
Description: The student will receive instruction to thoroughly develop knowledge of the basis principles of visual art. These are primarily composition, contrast, shading, color, and detail. When the student has a firm grasp on these elements, they are then able to express themselves more freely. The student will also learn about the tools and techniques that facilitate the flow of creation from their spirit, to their hands, to the surface receiving the art. Charcoal pastel, clay, and paint are some of the materials that will be used.

Description: Watercolor for those who think they can’t. We will dispel some myths about watercolors as you learn the basics of materials, techniques and begin to construct a painting, not just render your reference. If you already have supplies bring them to class.

Color Theory

Description: This class will delve into the fundamentals of color theory, looking at different schools of thought on this magical subject, such as the Bauhaus and modern physics. Class work will include color studies that help an artist understand the techniques of pigment mixing, optical blending, after imaging, etc. The goal of the class is to give the students a greater sense of comfort and familiarity with all colors, enabling them to enrich their personal tonal vocabulary



Open Painting Studio

Watermedia: Watercolor and Gouache

Description: Compared to transparent watercolor, gouache is opaque, thus creating dense and more brilliant color. Using both water media together creates higher contrast and stronger effects. Beginners are welcome and advanced water colorists can hone their skills. The student can choose to follow either the instructor’s reference or one of their own. Open to all skill levels.


Soft Pastel*

Thursdays: 1:30-4:30
Description: Soft pastel is probably the most sensual medium. Using sticks made of pure pigment, you will create art with a velvety surface that catches the light in a unique way. It can be intense or subtle, but it is always striking. Learn the techniques “tricks” from an expert in a friendly atmosphere. All other aspects of the creative process will be addressed, including composition, perspective, color, depth, of field, contrast, and more.

Description: In this class, you will learn to create paintings (oil and acrylic) based on photos, sketches, and/or memories. Papermaking

Description: This class is intended for both beginning and experienced papermakers or for those who are curious to try the medium. This is an opportunity to learn the ancient craft of papermaking and to take home several small sheets of your own handmade paper. Students will receive an overview of the papermaking process and instructions on the basics of sheet forming, pressing, and drying. Additional information will be provided as to how to create a papermaking environment without a formal studio. Basics of bookbinding and printmaking techniques may also be introduced.

This class is an exploration of rendering with two mediums accomplished on paper: graphite, pencil, and watercolor paint. The first few weeks will center on learning drawing skills; the last with both mediums. Students will be supported in the areas of techniques, composition, development of imagery and art history. A comprehensive discussion of color will be covered. The final few weeks will address working with transparent watercolor paint. Lessons will be compatible with both mediums.

Oil painting is an art form that is both ancient and modern. Jump into the stream of history and find your creative voice. Description: This program facilitates learning and training for the artist. Students may choose between four or five types of projects and work on them at their own pace. The teacher will provide individual guidance and instruction. This class is perfect for a student who has taken a fundamentals class, or whop shows great attitude for art. All ages are welcome to attend, providing an opportunity for families to study art together. Students can continue in this program for a long period of time as they develop and grow. Beginning students may join in at any time and receive the basic elements, which enhance the skills of an artist.

“Junque” Sculpture

Description: Please bring your “junque” to this eclectic class including unusual bottles, broken jewelry, discarded toys, fabric scraps, feathers, beautiful twigs, or natural objects like wire, interesting containers, etc. The focus will be to discover beauty through the use of an odd juxtaposition of recycled objects to be arranged in a new way. Finished pieces can be 3-dimensional, bas-relief effect (raised from a flat surface such as a board) or be created within a box. Reinvent, explore, discover. Beginners welcome.


Self Portraiture

Wednesday 4:30-6:00
Description: This class will open your eyes to the many ways one can “see” oneself. Students may choose from several different medias including pencil, charcoal, oil crayon, mixed media, or collage. Students may choose to use a mirror or to work from a favorite photograph or try both. The teacher will encourage students to “draw from within” to express who they are through the use of color, shape, texture, line, and composition. Basic proportion of the human head will be discussed as well as examples of self-portraits by many famous artists. While some fundamentals of drawing may be helpful, beginners are more than welcome because there are no “mistakes”.


Art and Autism

Various time slots available.
Art media exploration and sensory experiences for children who are high functioning on the Autistic spectrum. Class is one hour and can be arranged in a series to create a product, or single lesson just for the experience. Children’s work will be displayed in the student art shows at OPAL. Each class will consist of three different media experiences. Parents may stay to watch, or be available by phone during the class after we get to know each other.


One of a Kind Cartooning

This highly creative class is perfect for those interested in developing original ideas and translating them into a cartoon format. Classes will be organized thematically and artist will respond using a variety of materials including: pencil, graphite, markers, crayon, pen and ink, watercolor and washes. Each week students will submit at least one drawing for inclusion in a class booklet that everyone will receive at the last class. Materials included.


Digital Photo Editing for Beginners

Learn the basics of digital photos and how to edit. Remove red eye, crop, re-size, adjust color, remove or add objects, make composites, and more. Learn about pixel and DPI. What is resolution and is it better to be high resolution or low?





REGISTRATION POLICIES

You may mail or phone in your registration. Enrollment confirmation will not be sent until payment is received. Advanced registration is appreciated and recommended. Enrollment is considered on a first come first served basis. Classes with less than five students enrolled prior to the start of the class will be cancelled. 

Refunds
Tuition is refundable minus a processing fee as follows: Students may cancel up to three days before a class is scheduled to begin and receive a full refund. Students may drop a class any time after the first class of the session has met and before the second class of the session has met and receive a full refund minus a $15 processing fee. Students choosing to drop a class after the second class of a session has met are not eligible for a refund.

Cancellations
A full refund will be issued within three weeks if OPAL needs to cancel a class due to low enrollment. 

Classes may be made up only if they are cancelled by the teacher.

Children’s classes follow the District 97 school closure policies for weather or emergencies.


WAIVER AND RELEASE
In consideration of my attendance at or use of Oak Park Art League ("OPAL") facilities, I hereby assume all risks of personal injury, death, property loss or other damages that may result from or arise out of attendance at or use of or participation in any of OPAL's programs or activities.
