Biography

After receiving an Associates Degree in Fine Art & Graphic Design at Triton College , Cherie Salerno continued her art education and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. She participates in various outdoor art shows: The West Suburban Artist Guild’s Art in the Park, Oak Park , IL , Oakbrook Invitational, Oakbrook , IL , and Bucktown Art Fest Chicago, IL. She has been in a variety of different galleries throughout the past several years. Last year she had a special exhibit at The Bean Grounds Gallery up in the mountains of Taos , NM .

From 1996 to 2003, she was an art teacher at Bethlehem Lutheran Elementary School , River Grove. Salerno currently conducts private art lessons at her River Grove studio. Recent awards have included a 2005 Award of Excellence, at the Oakbrook Invitational Show, the West Suburban Artist Guild Best of Show Award in 2006 and a merit award at the 2007 Best of Best Show at the Elmhurst Museum , Elmhurst , IL .

Even though a tumor in Salerno ’s right eardrum turned that ear deaf and required two major surgeries, she did not let that stop her from creating her musically inspired artwork. (She admires Kandinsky and his thoughts about music and visual interpretations.) Cherie has done a variety of cover-art for musical CDs. and musical type publications like “Footlights”. Most recent, two of Salerno ’s music paintings are set for a 2007 CD cover release, “Eyn Velt” and “Urban Jungle” for musician and producer Brian Bender. In 2003 Salerno created a CD jazz cover design for Henry Johnson and Nancy Wilson, entitled “Organic”.

Salerno works in various styles, which she says is “like speaking different languages.” Her “music-style” interprets colors inspired directly by the sounds she hears. She says, “As I come forward with the color planes, an essence of the song comes out. Then I zero in with figures or objects”. In a way, she adds, “they’ve been there all along.” Describing her abstracted works she says, “I let myself be led spontaneously thru whatever subject matter I am working on. I usually have an idea or dream-thought that starts me out and I just jump in and let go! I hear a tune, feel the colors and go with it to see where I land!”
