Chalk One Up for the Oak Park Art League

Holley Court Terrace is teaming up with The Wednesday Journal and The Oak Park Art League to host the first annual “Chalk One Up for the Oak Park Art League.”  This outdoor street painting festival is scheduled for Sunday, June 23rd.

We expect to have over 40 artists participating.  We anticipate in excess of 400 to 500 people in attendance in this our inaugural year.  The site is the Holley Court Terrace east parking lot at Marion Street.  Preregistered artists will have a dedicated space to produce their artwork using colored pastel on the black pavement.  In addition, local sponsoring businesses will set up booths.  This family event will also have an area for younger artists to participate for free. All proceeds will benefit The Oak Park Art League.

If weather prevents the event from happening on the scheduled date, our make up date will be Sunday, May 24th.

Description: Over the last several centuries, artists have recognized that figure drawing is a basic skill in art instruction. If you can draw the human figure quickly, you can draw anything. These sessions are fun! Come, be a part of the group. Join us for tea, cookies, classical music, and live models.

Tuesdays

Figure Painting  

Facilitated by Nancy Fong

9:00AM-Noon in the Studio

Description: Working from a live model in a long pose held for 1-2 week sessions, our weekly Figure Painting meets on Tuesday mornings. The session is moderated but no instruction is provided. Artists bring their medium of choice. Tables, horses, easels, drawing boards, stools, and chairs are supplied.

 

Wednesdays

 Long Pose Figure Study

Facilitated by Cheryl Ann Spran

1:00-4:00PM in the Studio

Description: Studio painting from live models, male and female, clothed and nude. Particular attention is paid to lighting and the backdrop to produce the best tonal values for both portrait and figure painting. There is no instruction, but lots of sharing. All poses are held for the entire three hour period (with breaks) and repeated for not less than two weeks and preferably four weeks. The extended poses make this figure studio an excellent option for sculptors.

2012 Carriage House Gallery National Juried Exhibition

The Oak Park Art League announces the 2nd Annual Carriage House Gallery National Juried Exhibition, October 12 through November 16 2012.

The exhibit is open to all artists nationwide working in any visual media including Photography and Digital art.  Submitted artworks will be juried and then judged by Margot McMahon for Best of Show, First, Second and Third  place. 

The National Exhibition’s opening reception, held on October 12th from 7-9 pm and the Judge’s Selections will be announced. Over $4,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.

The opening and exhibition offers residents, visitors and exhibitors the opportunity to view the chosen works from across the nation. The public is encouraged to attend as well as participate in featured events throughout the duration of the exhibit including gallery talks, workshops and artist demonstrations.

The Art League’s rich history is punctuated with significant names in the art world such as  E.E. Roberts, architect of the Art League’s current home, Grace Hall Hemmingway, founder Carl Krafft, and notable members such as Charles Dahlgreen, Phillip White and James Eccles to name just a few.
Located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright neighborhood of Oak Park Illinois, the Oak Park Art League met in Frank Lloyd Wright’s home studio in the early years before settling in the remodeled carriage house down the street at 720 Chicago Ave.
The Oak Park Art League is proud of its history of providing art instruction and exhibition opportunities to the Chicago art community since 1921 and looks forward to hosting a vibrant exhibit of artist’s works from across the nation.

 About the Juror: Margot McMahon Public sculpture commissions and museum and gallery exhibitions have been the core of Margot’s work as an artist. Her Sculptures are included in the collections of  The Smithsonian, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Chicago Historical Society, the Chicago Horticultural Society and Botanic Gardens, and Yale University. Her sculptures and drawings are included in private collections in the United States and Europe. She has taught sculpting and drawing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, DePaul University, Yale University’s Norfolk Summer School and assistant taught at Yale University while earning her MFA. She has been a board member of the Oak Park Area Arts Council, Chicago’s National Museum of Women in the Arts and a founding commissioner on the Village of Oak Park’s Public Art Advisory Commission.
