Sallie Wolf Title: The Artist's Garden: A Work in Progress Medium: Mixed media drawings and a three-dimensional mixed media sculpture Inspiration: Workshops at Dr. Pat Allen's Studio Pardes in Oak Park "These pictures are not illustrations and this text is not the finished story, but by drawing pictures and writing about them, I am discovering a story that has been locked inside me for six or seven years. The germ of the idea came when an art teacher of mine described her new house, which she said was a really ugly yellow brick bungalow. I was intrigued with the idea of buying a house that you didn't like in a neighborhood which you also felt was ugly, sterile and unwelcoming. And I wondered in what ways an artist might transform an ugly house. For a long time I thought I was going to write a picture book, but, as I have begun to discover the story, it is more complex and challenging in content than most picture books are allowed to be. I am still in the process of discovering this story by drawing the pictures that come to me like presents." |
